Love Fern

You know the movie "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days"? Well, remember the "love fern" in it? Devin and I have a love fern too. This is it...

Kinda sad looking, huh?

Yeah, so here's the story...Devin and I met when I was 15. Of course, I had the hots for him, but we couldn't really "date" until I was 16. So one day when we were hanging out at my house my mom decided to give this plant to Devin and tell him that if he could keep it alive until I was 16 he could take me on a date. Why she did this? I don't know, but he accepted the challenge and a few months later, when I turned 16, the plant was still alive and going strong.

While Devin was on his mission his mom took care of the plant and kept it alive. When he got home and we were married, we took the plant and have had it ever since. We've kept it trimmed really little and it's almost died a few times, but somehow it has managed to hold on.

So, knowing that background, here's the deal...I don't really like indoor plants. I think they are pretty and flowers are great, but taking care of a plant just isn't something I care to do. I don't know how this love fern is even still alive after 5 years of marriage and almost 3 years previous to that. So, I told Devin I just wanted to throw the plant away and he didn't really like that idea. Now, I am a sentimental person, but I don't think throwing away this plan is like saying, "I give up on our relationship and don't care anymore." I just don't want this little plant. I don't know, I guess it just sits on the armor and isn't really that much to care for, so maybe I'll just keep it.

What do you think? I am cold hearted because I'm not really attached to the "love fern"?

That is the sweetest story I have ever heard. If that isn't true love I don't know what is. I have to say that I would probable keep it alive just because of the story behind it. My brother had leukemia when he was younger and he had gotten a plant from somewhere(I don't remember where). My mom kept that plant alive for years because she told herself that my brother wasn't going to die and neither was this plant. I think that it is very sweet.

Oh, my. Definitely keep the fern. I would put it in a cute little pot that is just the right size for the plant and that accents the colors in the room it's in. Then it won't just be an annoyance, it will add to your deco. :) Maybe I'm too sentimental, but I would try to keep that little plant alive as long as I possibly could!
Plus you have to think from a guys perspective taking care of a plant might not really be their thing. And the fact that it meant so much to Devin to keep it alive all those years shows that he really cares, and if he's that sentimental about it, I wouldn't get rid of it! There's my 2 cents for what they're worth, and probably a lot longer than you cared to read! :)

Super cute story Ruthann! It was funny.. I remember I bought a plant after Jason & I were married and was like, "if I can keep this plant alive then maybe I will be responsible enough to be ready for kids." So ya I kept that little plant alive in the cream pot until Makenna was over 1 years old..then it died sometime after our 1st move. Maybe we should stop moving huh..anyway so good you blogged about it, especially since it seems to be down to its last leaf, lol!

I love that story, but I'm not sentimental at all, and I would probably throw it away without Corey even knowing if we had something like that. He probably would have tossed it long before that. I'm not a houseplant person myself.

That is SOOO FUNNY!!!! Chase and I HAD a love fern too :P I was also sick of having to take care of it and I did away with it...we are still married and nothing bad has happened from giving up on taking care of the plant :) Good luck trying to decide what to do :)

I would wanna keep it forever even after death haha and Steve would be constantly telling me to throw it out! So I would say keep it but at the same time the memory will be there with or without the plant!!:)
